sound tectonics #11
Akio Suzuki; Studies in Sonority and Space

Performing live at this event were Akio Suzuki, a pioneer of "sound art" performed on self-built instruments; evala, an artist who continues to push the boundaries of sound art using field recordings and three-dimensional sound; Marihiko Hara, whose works revolve around the central theme of strength in silence; and Hiromi Miyakita, who has been collaborating with Suzuki frequently in recent years.
The program was opened by Suzuki and Miyakita. Inspired by each other, Miyakita's dance and the rich and mellow sound of Suzuki's self-built instruments added multihued colors to the tranquil space, whereas the performance's instant modal changes inspired the audience to rediscover aspects of "sound" and "listening".
Appearing next were Hara and evala, a great admirer of Suzuki's work. By recording/processing sounds generated in Suzuki's own live set, and playing the results from numerous polyhedral speakers with changing positions, the artists reconfigured the soundscape originally created by Akio Suzuki, who ultimately joined Hara and evala on stage. In their layered performance of two soundscapes revolving around Suzuki's work, the artists forged one sonic creative environment.
